Saint Nicholas with the Three Boys in the Pickling Tub

South Netherlandish, circa 1500
Oak
Metropolitan Museum of Art, 16.32.193. Gift of J. Pierpont Morgan.

Unusually, the saint is shown with a mitre on his head. Dressed for the liturgy, he sits in his episcopal chair with crozier in hand and blesses the viewer. The boys in the tub, a familiar attribute of this saint, reference a tale in which he brought them back to life after an innkeeper had cut them up.
